Oh, Fiesta

Fiesta, you know how to make me laugh. That’s why I can’t quit you. That and the occasional week of 25c avocados.

What's not to love?

What’s not to love?

Cheepie is back on patrol, and will be back to the regular posting schedule.  So look forward to $10 dinners, store reviews, and all the deals!

Cheepie at Rest

This week I’m taking a break. After nearly a year, it’s time for a cheepiecation!

I’m going to be back in two weeks, hopefully with an improved format, and as always, all the deals.

If you spot a great deal, feel free to comment.  If you’ve got any thoughts for the blog in general I’d love to hear those too.

Thanks everyone! Cheep cheep!

Pot ‘O Bacon

Yeah, I’m cooking up a pot of bacon. Why, what are you doing with your day that’s so smart?

This is what happens when bacon is on sale, tomatoes are in the garden, and I want a sandwich or three.

Happy Ad Wednesday!

Have you ever made a Key lime pie? It’s dead easy. It’s so simple I taught one of my kids to make it so I could have it whenever I wanted without having to stop reading the internets.  What I think of as the traditional recipe is here, and Key limes are 99c for 2lbs, which is enough for at least two pies.  Get a sack, and make yourself a great summer dessert!  Or get my kid to do it for you!

Grapes are at a wonderful price again this week, and cantaloupes are under a buck at the right HEBs. Sprouts has strawberries for not the lowest they get, but organic and regular are the same so get the organic if you’re there.  Avocados aren’t a quarter this week, but 48c isn’t enough to have me pass them up, either. Guac on!

Guac On should clearly be a song by Gwar

Outside of produce, I’ll be stocking up on frozen vegetables and rice at Fiesta, and the pork tenderloin from HEB.  Look for a couple of $10 dinner posts later this week.

Reminder: the C15 and DD labels are to let you know it’s on the Environmental Working Group’s list of either heaviest pesticide load (DD) or lightest (C15). The full lists are available here, and I try to label them so if you’re not up for paying all-organic-all-the-time (like me) you can make informed choices about when you might get the organic because it’s in your price range, or is an item your family eats very often.

Blueberry Math!

Cheepsters, if you’ve been here a while, you know how I feel about unit pricing. This week we’ve got a great example: blueberries.

They freeze great, they work in smoothies, and can be eaten plain or in a dish. Blueberries are a great item to stock up on. Knowing the price to stock up on is key–and for that we need to be able to compare prices!

This week we’ve got–

Fiesta:        pint, $1.99.

Randalls:    pint $2.50.

HEB:           pint, 98c.

Sprouts:      18 oz., $1.98

I nearly made an error. I’d really thought the Sprouts deal was the best, and was going to put it on my Happy Ad Wednesday post. “$2 for more than twice as much,” that was my thinking.

But then my math brain kicked in, and started making noises about ‘how many ounces are in a pint’ and ‘just because a lot of berries are sold in 6 oz. units not all are’.

Turns out I’m not the only one that thinks about this, and it turns out that if you price it out by the ounce, HEB is the place for blueberries this week.

So stock up, Cheepsters, and have a wonderful, safe holiday with family and friends!

Happy Ad Wednesday!

Happy 4th of July! As with most summer holidays, the stores are celebrating by putting meat on sale!

Not gonna weigh in on the hot dog situation–all kinds are on sale from straight up 69c per packages of pureed tush and tails versions all the way to hand-ground with no-nitrates-or-fillers-or-stuff-that-isn’t-from-an-animal-that-lived-a-dang-happy life versions. In other meat news, pork butt is on deep sale at HEB, and beef brisket is at an amazing $1.59 at Randalls. There’s a limit, but at that price I’ll be stopping by a few times this week to pick up a couple each time.

Bacon remains in a weird low zone. Randalls has a 3lb package at $7.49 and Fiesta  has a 24oz package at $3.69. That puts Fiesta 3c lower per pound, but they’re both good prices.

Randalls has the 2lb cheese bricks and bags for $6.99. This isn’t as good as the $2/lb Sprouts specials, but those haven’t shown up for several weeks now. $3.50 isn’t a bad price, and it’ll get you some quick quesadilla meals.

To wrap things up this week I’ve got an apology. I’d listed sugar last week ($1.99/4lbs) and now this week here it is at $1.59 for the same size.  If you stocked up last week, I’m sorry! Hopefully this week’s brisket deal saves you more than you’d spent.

Happy Ad Thursday!

I know, it’s late. Sometimes that’ll happen. Summer is hectic and my second job (third? fourth?) requires I drive the next Cheepie generation all over town, and the city frowns on my writing posts while I drive. So for this week, a Thursday ad post.

Corn is at 6/$1, so if you didn’t try some of these last time you’ve got another week to find your favorite.  Boneless chicken is cheap, yogurts are 50c, bacon is under $3 a pound again and Fiesta’s got rice and pinto beans on sale.  You can throw a lot of meals together on the cheap this week!

$5 Friday

Earl Campbell hot links, 36 oz.                                       $5/ea

AquaStar Salmon portions, 1lb, wild caught, frozen       $5/ea

Yes, I’ve got two kinds of organic apples listed. That’s because Red Delicious is like the weird uncle of apples. It looks okay, but when you take its effect as a whole you’re not sure what’s up.  So I put Gala down also because those are the ones that my kids will eat every day and not ask me things like, “Why does this apple have such a weird peel and want to watch Bigfoot Hunters all day long?”

Also, I don’t have any chicken legs/thighs listed, though they are 49c/lb at Fiesta, because we just had them on sale for 39c/lb there a week or two back.  If you need chicken, you can go there. If you don’t want to deal with the 10lb sack, HEB has their $1/lb drumstick value pack this week.

$10 Dinner, Mostly Happy & Very Healthy

This meal is from a while back, but the sales it’s based on roll around pretty regularly. My basic formula of meat/fruit/cooked veg/raw veg/starch is still how I tend to think about pulling a meal together, since 2/5ths of the family would very much prefer foods not touch.

(I Daydream of Casseroles.  That’ll be the name of my parenting book.  Chapter titles include: Shoes: How to Keep Track of the Suckers, Snot and the Removal Thereof, What’s that Smell?, and How to Poop Alone. )

Normal Person Meal

  • peaches                   $1.55
  • pasta, 16oz.             $0.99
  • blueberries               $0.88
  • 2 cloves garlic          $0.12       (~70c/bulb, 12 cloves/bulb)
  • tomatoes                  garden!
  • basil                         garden!
  • butter, 2 T                $0.22        ($3.49/lb for 32T)
  • half an onion            $0.11        (8 onions, 3lbs, for $1.79 = 22c/onion)
  • chicken, 1 lb.           $1.99
  • spinach                    $2.50     (half of a 1lb box for $5)

Grand Total:                  $8.36

Clearly, not everyone has a garden, so the extra spent there would but you right about $10.  This meal had everyone happy with the pasta, chicken and fruit, the kids not excited about sliced tomatoes with salt or the steamed spinach, and me glad to have a healthy meal in about 30 minutes.

Stay tuned for the next $10 dinner! Cheep cheep!
